Advice From Dad

In honor of Father’s Day, one of my favorite radio stations (K-LOVE) asked callers to share the best advice they’d ever received from their dads.  I didn’t even have to think about it, I knew instantly. I didn’t call-in, but I’ll share it here.  In honor of my dad…..

Back in the day, while driving home from high school rodeos, the entire family would often rehash the day’s events…both in the arena and otherwise.  On one such occasion, one of us kids made a rude remark about a fellow competitor – basically “made fun” of this person.  I have absolutely no recollection of the details of what was said; or who it was said about; or even which of us kids said it, but I’ve never forgotten how my dad put an end to that line of talk.  He said, “Never make fun of someone who has not had the opportunities that you’ve had.  They’re doing the best they can with what they’ve got.”  Great advice that has stuck with me for so many years and that I’ve needed in so many different situations throughout my life.
